Misogyny Watch: new project

Today, there is a new force for gender equality in the world. Well, it’s an attempt at one… It is: Misogyny Watch!

This is a new project and I’m quite excited about it. Here’s what it’s for.

It seemed to me that while there’s often plenty of righteous high profile reaction to mainstream media when they publish racist, homophobic or imperialist articles, sometimes what seems to be pretty virulent hatred of women passes under the radar. Time to redress the balance. And to see the funny side, of course. Laughter is more powerful than polemic.

So Misogyny Watch will point out when the media is guilty of sexism, or gender hate, and link to it so everyone can make their own minds up. And yes, I do realise the Daily Mail trawl alone will take hours. :)

So far, there’s just a Twitter account, but the blog site will follow soon. I’ll cross-link from here to there, so hope you’ll drop by and say hello when it’s up and running. If you notice an example of anti-woman hatred in any media, please send a link to @MisogynyWatch on Twitter, or email to me at Postculturist for now (official MW email address to follow).

Thanks to everyone who’s supported MW so far too. It’s only a few hours old and we’re already off with a bang. Love and great karma to the retweeters!

Looking forward to the new blog.

Does Gordon’s new magdalene laundries plan count?

(Admittedly, he hasn’t mentioned actual laundering, but the rest of the model is there for the fallen women of the undeserving poor…)

Thanks Red. Yes, apparently he wasn’t even joking when he made that suggestion either. And it’s lifted directly from a BNP policy leaflet too, according to people who’ve read one.

It’s going to be a topical thing starting as of now, so it’ll certainly pick up on that if it’s mentioned from this day forward. Mainly it’s intended to keep an eye on the media themselves, so their angle on reporting things like the ‘imprison single mothers’ policy will be the make or break issue as far as MW is concerned.

I believe the BNP version also includes a requirement to wear a skirt to below the knee and top that shows no cleavage…

Otherwise yes, the Brown policy is very like the BNP’s. And not for the first time (see also: ‘British jobs for British workers’ etc).
