Money talks

Some of you may have noticed that Postculturist has been carrying ads for some time. Well, they’ve gone. Apart from Amazon.

It was always trial and error, but here are the main issues:

  1. The ads are ugly and spoil the place. It’s not just the corporate-ness, although that’s a bit horrid. It’s the colonisation of a creative space. It puts me off and, I daresay, it puts the reader off a little sneaky bit, even though we’re all used to tuning them out.
  2. Because we’re all used to tuning them out, they’re pointless. You earn per click, or per purchase, generally. I can safely say without doing any maths at all that the earnings to date of the main brand ads have not covered one month of hosting charges.
  3. The Google ads were even worse. I was compelled to remove them the minute they started rotating non-stop Scientology ads. Webmasters worldwide have been appalled to note that there is no way of filtering this sort of thing out. So off they went.

However, Amazon ads remain. That’s because pretty much everyone shops there and it’s the one last compromise. When someone clicks through to Amazon via the ad on this site and ends up buying something, this site will earn a few pence towards its hosting. It’s never going to be a moneyspinner, what with tightening purse strings, but it might offset a tiny corner of the costs.

So no more brand ads, no more flashy logos and no more awkward salesmanship rubbing shoulders with snarky cultural commentary. Just honest-to-goodness abominable drawings from moi and possibly some decent art in future from people whose expertise is above toddler level. Get stuck in.

Not at all. Your art has a creative flair all its own. It’s a little retro, like your vintage clothes, you know? Celebrate the art that is you!

    *beam*

  2. red says:

Yeah, I’m with Aravis. Don’t knock your drawings. I particularly like the version of you in the footer. Have you thought of animating them?

The drawings are a lot more fun than the ads at any rate. When (technically an “if”, I know) Amazon goes, will that make your site un-ad-ulterated?

    *ducks for cover*

  3. Queenie says:

You’re both much too kind. Retro is good though, thanks Aravis!

Red, I wouldn’t have a clue how to animate anything, although I know a man who does. Amazon’s staying for now I’m afraid. Not that it’ll turn this into anything other than a minor loss-making venture, but I have to have a stab at it. Sigh. Life, eh?
