Last night, I watched a jawdropping piece of theatre.
This being the 21st century, it was of course an American high school production beamed live over the internet, co-devised with the high priestess of aceness (and school alumna), Amanda Palmer.
The students, Amanda Palmer and drama teacher Steven Bogart used the magnificent Neutral Milk Hotel album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea as inspiration for this story about Anne Frank in the concentration camp, where her creativity battles against its horror and almost wins.
It’s no exaggeration to say that With The Needle That Sings In Her Heart was one of the most imaginative, touching and original theatrical productions I’ve ever seen. And it starred kids. Not just kids, AMATEUR kids. Unbe-bloody-lievable, it was.
Anyway, if you missed the live broadcast, then don’t fret. Apparently a recorded edit will be available on YouTube at some point. It’s a couple of hours long and it makes no sense at the beginning, but that just adds to the charm. Take my word for it, go on.
Christ on hot buttered toast, the internet’s great. Did we really ever manage without it?
Listen to the title song of this post here:
Oh, a bit of Postculturist news: I’ve updated the About page, including a me-me-me sub-page. Both remain a bit half-baked, even now, but that’s the sort of approach you’ve come to expect from this site. It’s nothing if not consistent.

Forgot to mention that while this is still the most recent post, you can listen to the Neutral Milk Hotel song ‘Oh Comely’ by clicking ‘Play’ in the Blip.fm box in the right hand sidebar >>>
I will have a look at the theatre thing as soon as I´m somewhere with speedy broadband… which may be when I egt to read the you, you, YOU page too at this rate.
Just dropping in from an internet caff in the middle of nowhere to wave a cheery hello in the meantime.
Right, I will try the about page now, bvut the chances of successfully navigating back to comment on it are low…
Ignore my comment at the top. I’ve now embedded the Blip player in the post, which is far more sensible.
Hello Red. Hope you’re enjoying your wanderings.
Here’s a much better review, which includes a comment confirming that they’re working on a nice tidy HD web edit. Hooray.
Wow, I hadn’t heard about this, but now want to see it. Thanks for passing along this gem. :0)
Aravis, it is great. I think the final edit will be less than 2 hours once they take out the live transitions and so forth. I’ll be watching it again and have been listening to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea a lot this week too.
- OK I WILL STOP TALKING ABOUT IT NOW -
*world heaves mighty sigh of relief*
